BLUEBELL was a shy young female who had spent her life in shelters. She lost her life to kidney failure.
TREVOR was a sweet little kitten rescued from a parking lot. He was born with a medical problem that took his life.
July 2003 ~ August 22, 2005
August 22, 2005 ~ October 24, 2005
HARRY was another adorable little guy, who had a congenital esophageal problem that did not become evident till he was adopted and taken from his mother. He could not swallow solid food. He is very missed by his adoptive family.
September 10, 2005 ~ October 12, 2005
P-NUT was a tiny little guy who never weighed more than a few ounces. His mother accidentally took him out of this world.
March 2000 ~ October 23, 2005
STORMY was a handsome young man who was very scared when he was given up to us -- he seemed to really miss his former home. We tried but could not get him acclimated, he quit eating and then developed pneumonia --- and died with a broken heart.
March 13, 2000 ~ April 26, 2006
March 13, 2000 ~ April 22, 2006
WILMA ( formerly WILSON ) was 14 years old when her owner brought her to Kitty Harbor. She did fairly well with us, but when she came down with a bad cold, the vet said her age was against her. She just couldn't beat it. She was a sweet old girl and we miss her.
We lost SIENNA to pancreatitis that didn't become apparent until it was already too late. She was rushed to the vet but had to be released from her suffering. This picture was taken just a few days before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
THEA had spent most of her life in shelters. She was never fond of people, and when she became ill, we tried for 3 days to catch her to get her to the vet. She bit through the glove of the last person that tried, on the night before she passed. We feel badly that we weren't able to get her treated -- she just wasn't having it. Thea and Sienna were sisters, and died 4 days apart.
Sometimes a cat just cannot adjust, and stops eating. We tried everything, including force-feeding, but BRITTANY went into liver failure and had to be euthanized. It was heartbreaking.
DOB ? ~ June 22, 2006
He was much older than we were told
LAUREN was the sweetest friendliest cat, adopted and much loved by Toula and her 3 daughters.
February 16, 2000 ~ June 13, 2006
2003 ? ~ September 20, 2006
When VALERIE died very suddenly, we had a necropsy done to determine the cause. The finding was acute cardiac failure due to heart disease. She was a sweetheart, a wonderful friendly cat, and we feel badly that she never got the chance to find a home of her own. But, she had some good months with us -- we have to take comfort in that.
MAX was a big senior, who'd lived outside for a long time and had the matted coat and bad teeth to prove it. He was lucky enough to go into a wonderful and loving foster home, where he was treated for his problems. The vet estimated he was even older than we'd thought. His age-related problems progressed, and when he could no longer walk, his foster mom took him to be humanely euthanized. We are very thankful to Beth G for giving him the best care he could get in his last months.
From her foster mom, Beth H :
"GINGER was just a little over 6 months old when she succumbed to FIP. She was the most sweet, peaceful, gentle little cat and will be missed terribly.
She was such a trooper, never complaining at all. She was playful and purring until the end. Now she has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, met by Silver, Linus, and Sundance -- the Collie who was so like her. We look forward to seeing her again. She will never leave our hearts."
CECELIA was rescued from under a porch in a trailer park, starving ( 4 1/2 lbs ) and sick. What looked like an eye injury turned out to be an inoperable malignancy behind her eye. When her quality of life was no longer good, she was gently euthanized. She was sweet and loving til the end, even though she was in pain.
November 2002 ~ January 22, 2007
TWITCH was the pet of Janie Weeman. From Janie :
" My dearest Twitch came into our lives as a stray back in September 2006. She had leukemia but we loved her so much that we kept her. She was a special little girl who loved to be loved. She loved "helping" with the dishes. A water girl, she was. She was a big lap cat and had to share me with her best friend Jazzy. I hope wherever she is, she is happy and free from her disease. I'll never forget this special little girl who came into my life. She'll be forever in my heart. "
SQUEAKY was one of the very first cats to come into Kitty Harbor's care when we opened in 2005. Her family didn't want her anymore because she had a UTI. She got over that with treatment, but had thyroid issues and eventually renal failure. She lived in 3 different foster homes during her time with us, and she was loved and cared for in all of them. Thank you to Tina, Alicia, and Dottie for giving her the love she deserved in her last years.
June 20,1992 ~ May 17, 2007
PENNY had been with us a long time when she developed severe diabetes. Her quality of life was no longer good and we were forced to have her euthanized on May 17, 2007. She was one of 2 cranky office cats and the office just isn't the same without her.
HENRY was rescued from life in a trailer park in Bozrah in the spring of 2007. He was a big guy. Although we couldn't quite pet him, he was getting more used to us every day. He died very suddenly on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon. We are heartbroken that we didn't see this coming and were unable to prevent it from happening.
The last week of July 2007 was a rough week at Kitty Harbor. JENNA died 3 days after Henry. She also had come from the same trailer park. While she was at the hospital for an infected paw ( caused by fighting ) she had a stroke and died. We were all stunned by her and Henry's passing.
August 1995 ~ January 2008
When DINAH came to Kitty Harbor in the winter of 2007, her elderly owner had passed away and she'd already spent several months at a vet's office looking to be adopted. At 14 years of age her chances weren't good. We placed her in our Senior room and she was no trouble -- just a sweet old cat who slept a lot and wanted the occasional pets. But when she started losing weight at a rapid rate, despite eating and drinking, blood tests were done and came back normal -- but an xray showed an unknown mass in her abdomen. The last week of March 2008 she began to go downhill and the vet felt euthanasia was the kindest thing to do for her. Whatever she had wasn't going to get better. Gini was with her when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We think that at the end of her life, Dinah knew that she was in a place where she was loved.
EDGAR was a former feral who had spent all of his life in shelters -- in fact he came to Kitty Harbor from another shelter. He remained very skittish and fearful of humans -- annual shot time meant the net, no fun for anyone -- but he got along fine with his roommates and never caused any problems. He had his most definite favorite friend , and that was Nell. They loved to headbutt each other.
He never looked like the healthiest cat in the world, and it wasn't too surprising when he was diagnosed with kidney failure in early September 2008. I guess you could say he had a short but sweet life, where he at least had a roof over his head, good food and medical care, and a warm place to sleep. He did better than most ferals, who spend their short lives scrounging for food in dumpsters and sleeping in junked cars.

MURPHY was a senior when he came to KH because his owner had passed away. He was adopted once and despite great patience on the part of the adopters, he was returned for spraying. He adjusted to our main room, and then quietly claimed a spot on the couch, where he lived out his last days. He was a sweet old gentleman.

January 11, 1998 ~ July 21, 2009
Calista had her problems in her young life. She developed an eye infection very young and afterward had a permanent need for medicating several times daily with "artificial tears." She also lost a significant amount of weight and despite many vet visits, no definite diagnosis was made. She was much smaller than she should have been at her age. She was very sweet with people, despite all the unpleasant medicating she had to put up with. She was a love.
Sadly, Calista had to be euthanized on
June 10, 2009. We miss her very much.
Princess came to us a toothless senior who'd lost her longtime home. She lived her remaining time at Kitty Harbor, loved and cared for.
January 18, 1999 ~ July 24, 2009
May 30, 1999 ~ July 31, 2009
August 13, 1997 ~ January 27, 2010
Midnight was adopted and renamed Sweetie. Sadly, she became ill with cancer and had to be euthanized at only 3 years of age. Her adopter Janie loved her very much.
March 24, 2007 ~ April 2, 2010
CINDER came in with a group of cats rescued after the Peachtree Apartment fire in Norwich in April 2008. All were adopted, only Cinder remained with us. He was a great cat, friendly, and loved to roll over and show his fat belly. He had two successful surgeries for ear polyps while he was with us, but recently developed an inoperable tumor in his throat that prevented him from swallowing. Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing - he was euthanizied June 1, 2010. Boy will he be missed.
June 1, 2005 ~ June 1, 2010
May 6, 1999 ~ July 8, 2010
Scamper was a sweet older cat, who came to us with several others when her owner became seriously ill and could no longer care for them. She developed a mouth cancer and had to be euthanized on July 8 2010.
Timmy was one of our special needs boys, due to shyness. He got along with other cats, but people, not so much. He had always lived in shelters and he had a home for life with us, but he became sick with FIP and had to be euthanized in mid - July 2010. It has been a very sad time at KH this summer.
Benny was Mr. Kitty Harbor. He was with us for almost 5 good years. He went through a lot of health issues, but always bounced back : he had at least 9 lives. His personality was amazing - he was a love. He'll never be forgotten by any of us.
Galahad was a beautiful young boy, lost to incurable kidney failure. Thank you Dottie, for giving him the best possible love and medical care.
May 5, 2004 ~ January 2011
Tigger's problems with IBS could not be resolved, even with expert care from Dottie, our nurse. He came to us sick, got somewhat better, but in the end could not beat his disease.
Casey came to Kitty Harbor from another shelter where the clock was ticking down for him - he was on the euthanasia list. He had 5 good years at Kitty Harbor before a spinal tumor caused him to lose the use of his back legs, and he was gently euthanized.
Taffy was the sister of Benny and Cedric, and like them, she had many health issues. She had a wonderful loving personality, just like her brothers. We feel fortunate to have given them a home in their final years. Taffy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 26, 2011.
CEDRIC was one of a group of 6 cats that came to us in our first year, 2005. He was rescued along with Benny, Taffy, Smokey, Butch, and Sammy from the home of an elderly hoarder in November 2005. They were older cats when they came to us, and as time went on, developed health problems. Thyroid surgery was done on several of them and they did well and thrived at KH. They got lots of attention at the shelter and were very loved. Cedric started losing weight in 2008, and the vet diagnosed pancreatic cancer in August. We knew the humane thing would be to euthanize him, and after everyone said their goodbyes, this was done. As one of our volunteers said, the place just isn't the same without him.
Roxy and Tangela came into our shelter separately in the summer of 2011. Each came in with her siblings, but had difficulty adjusting to crowded shelter life. By late November, both were very sick, stopped eating and had to be euthanized. The stress they endured from losing their homes no doubt contributed : cats can be very very sensitive. Early deaths are part of the territory with shelter work - but these two were especially difficult.
